I'm reporting on my weekend today, even though its Thursday.. Its been that kind of week... Weekend highlights were seeing "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" with moxiegirl , karaoke with Lauren (duet of "Into the Groove"), playing Anagrams and Pictionary in one night (!), almost going to the biggest casino in the world, and finding Yo La Tengo's "Fake Book" at the used CD store... I really enjoyed "Sunshine" but there were some scenes that bugged me... I was reading a review of it in the New Yorker and agree that Mark Ruffalo would have been a much better choice for the main character and that Jim Carrey should have played the wacked out scientist guy.. I love Mark Ruffalo who is perfect in "You Can Count On Me" and "My Life Without Me." I rented some random movie from Netflix called "XX/YY" just because he's in it.. Could be pretty bad!
I've been in a funny reckless mood lately-- going out a lot and being Ms. party girl. But, I've never really done that before. When E. and I were together it was let's go out to dinner and play Scrabble. We weren't really into bars... I'm meeting interesting people though and having fun so I'm not worried-- its just a really different scene than what I'm used to.

10:07 am - my weekend
|
I had such lovely time in NYC this weekend.. The weather was sunny and perfectly breezy- it made me want to walk around the city for hours. Ro and I were pretty tired on Saturday so we did a good bit of lounging around her apartment. I watched "The Office" for the first time on DVD and LOVED it. Completely hilarious. I love that character Tim..
We went to my favorite cafe, Cafe Edgar's where I had an amazing slice of pumpkin cognac cheesecake and steamed milk with orzata syrup. I swear no other place makes that drink like Edgar's! I've tried and tried... The other food highlight was Inoteca--really simple delicious Italian food on the lower East side. Their pesto bruschetta blew us away.
My show on Sunday went really well... I was nervous about how many people would be there but it was full and the sound was top notch.. It was nice to play for Ro and Ben who hadn't seen me play in forever.
Last night I was completely zonked because I got home late on Sunday.. I watched "Interiors" which I can't believe I hadn't seen.. Such a good Woody Allen movie. I'm still a bit sleepy. This snowy weather is bringing me down too!

Last night was cheesy movie time with "Dirty Dancing: Havanna Nights"!! Patrick Swayze looked BAD! From afar he looked pretty good, but then the close up revealed the truth. He had a small role as the dance instructor.. Now, Diego Luna did not look bad. He has the cutest most charming baby face... I didn't like the main girl but at least she had good chemistry with Diego... There were some fun dance scenes, but the editing was weird and choppy so nothing really flowed right.
We did see previews for TWO more cheesy must see movies- one where Julia Stiles meets a prince but doesn't know he's a prince, and then one where Jennifer Garner plays a 13 year old girl who wakes up one day as a 30 year old magazine exec... Both looked very promising.
Sunday, I'm playing a show at The Living Room- my first show in NYC! Even more exciting is that Norah Jones' side project is playing there the same night. I'm not a huge fan, but I think her voice is amazing and from what I've read about her she's the most down to earth girl ever to have sold 17 million records...

12:00 pm - back from Eire
|
|
I'm back... I had a great trip, though it went by incredibly quickly and we had almost zero down time. We followed the band's van from city to city. Schedule is: play a show, stay up until 4 in the morning singing and drinking, wake up late, drive to the next hotel, drop off your stuff and then head straight to the venue for sound check. And then do the exact same thing the next day..The energy and enthusiasm was incredible though... It was amusing to see all the young Irish lassies rush Josh after a show. Its no exaggeration how big he is over there.
The drives from city to city were green, sunny, (surprise!) and sheep filled. Em gets many kudos for driving on the opposite side of the road while on the opposite side of the car.. She ruled the road...
So, we weren't on our schedule but it was still a blast. Em and I sold merch. for two of the shows which was fun. We got to meet a ton of people that way and could answer their questions so much better than any random merch person... I would love to live in Dublin someday. Its such an old beautiful city, yet really young feeling.
I did manage to hit the LUSH in Dublin and also pick up Crunchies for moxiegirl and Feminax for birchdryad... We also got to see the French duo Air our last night in Dublin.. Amazing show! Alright,</span>![[info]](http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif) ![[info]](http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif)

2:44 pm - sayonara!
|
I'm leaving for Ireland tomorrow! I have so much to do including laundry, packing and in general, just getting everything in order... I need to shop for a new belt.. I've dropped a couple pants sizes, courtesy of the break up diet and my current belts are just not working out.
Last night I watched "Whale Rider".. Its a beautiful movie. It reminded me of "Rabbit Proof Fence". Both center around young indigenous girls who are amazingly strong and smart. They also light up the screen in a lovely way that's hard to describe. Both movies made me cry at least 4 times.
I had dinner with my parents last night and we finally talked about our trip to Vietnam! We're thinking about going in September for 3 weeks. We've been talking about this trip FOREVER so its very exciting to start thinking about dates and details!
Have a good week kids!

12:51 pm - curry makes me happy...
|
|
I made the best Thai curry last night! I used fresh galangal which was the missing link. I also threw in zuchinni, red peppers, and peas. I'm so happy to have the extra spicy leftovers for lunch today.
I have a busy weekend coming up. Tonight, I have a show at Smith and some friends from out of town are spending the night. Then themoth is coming for a visit and possibly the Bodester who I haven't seen in forever...
Have I told you how much I love Netflix? I joined for the free 2 week trial and am already sold. So far, I watched "Blue Car", "The Pianist", and "Hearts and Minds" (documentary about the war in Vietnam). I can't wait to see "Spellbound" which just arrived yesterday.... What other movies should I rent?

12:26 pm - much better
|
|
I was in such a weird mood yesterday- alternating between feeling sad and then getting mad at myself for being sick! Weird, I know.. But, my sore throat is better so I'm not full blown sick which is a good thing.
Last night was a fun S&B at moxiegirl's where we had cake for </span> la_monday 's birthday and I started a pair of mittens. I'm using a varigated wool blend that's bright pink and burgandy. Afterwards we played Quiddler (always a treat) and then watched a commercial free O.C. thanks to TIVO... There was some high drama going on! Tonight, I might go to the gym if I'm feeling up to it, but otherwise I'm looking forward to a night at home which I haven't had at all this week.
Happy Lunar New Year!

4:04 pm - Vote here to support same sex marriage!
|
Hi Folks,
Want to annoy the (antigay) American Family Association? They are conducting an online poll about gay marriage, and plan to show their results to Congress. When I took it, it said 93% oppose same-sex marriage and civil unions, and that 3% are in favor. Of course, it begs the question, who are they polling? Well, some friends and I decided we needed some OTHER input.
Go here: http://www.marriagepoll.com
Help us correct their results! It takes a few seconds of your time.

5:58 pm - hey ho

Christmas was a whirlwind this year.. My parents, brother and I went to Malden on X-mas eve. to see my mom's family. I forget how many relatives I have. There was literally no room under the tree for presents, so we had to put a ton in the next room.. There were a few cousins visiting from Vietnam which added to the already large family.. But it was great because there were lots of happy kids there which is the best part about X-mas to me... My uncle had his web cam. hooked up and was talking to his mom in Vietnam!
I was sad since it was my first X-mas without E. so it was nice to have the distraction of tons of little kids running around.
Today, I cleaned, went to the gym and to Trader Joe's.. Tonight, I'm going to a game night which I'm excited about. I got a great new game from my brother called Word X Change that I can't wait to try out...

10:21 am - first real snow...
|
The first major snow storm has finally hit... There's a craft fair at Smith that I was going to go w. Kelsey and Anya but it may be cancelled.. There's also a Christmas party tonight and a show in Easthampton later so now my plans are all up in the air. Good thing I stocked up on movies. I love my video store where you can rent 5 DVD's for 5 days. I also pre-paid so it comes to only $3 for 5. I rented a crazy mish mash of movies:
About A Boy The Order (Matthew Barney's Cremaster 3)-- the cover is insanely bizarre and I was curious about Bjork's boyfriend!) Ratcatcher Monsoon Wedding The Donner Party (Ric Burns documentary)
so with all my knitting prjoects and the vids, i should be pretty set...

12:38 pm - lush let down...
|
I went to the new Lush store in Boston on Sunday and I am sad to say that it was a bit of a let down! Mostly because of the U.S. prices.. I'm so used to that automatic 30% Canadian discount, but here an average size bar of soap is $8-9!!! You could slice off a smaller piece but it would be pretty tiny.. So, I only got a few things: sea vegetable soap, a citrus kind that I've never tried, and one of their solid shampoo bars. At least I know the solid shampoo lasts forever...
FYI, D.C. and New York folks, LUSH stores will soon be in your cities...

12:33 pm - with ginger...
|
Yum.. I'm eating leftover butternut squash and apple soup with ginger. Its much more flavorful the second day.. Last night I was a little disappointed but it came through for me this afternoon.
My weekend was pretty good.. I drove up to Burlington, VT for a college gig on Friday night. The students were really sweet and it was a nice cozy space. I sold some CDs and a bunch of girls asked me to sign some posters afterwards. I was so impressed with the design (cool cherub children with my name in flowers) that I snagged a couple. Part of the deal was a hotel room for the night, so I was able to shop in Burlington the next day though I didn't buy a thing except for lunch. Took my time driving home and cranked the new Death Cab For Cutie which just gets better and better. They are my new crush.
Sat. night I went to see my friends' band Spanish for Hitchiking.. it got me excited to try playing with those guys which we've talked about doing.. I need to think of a cool name if we ever play as a group.
Sunday, E. and I went to Snow Farm which is an artists' collective. They were having their annual Pottery seconds sale. I bought a couple nice mugs for me but no Christmas gifts which was the goal...I'm working on knitting a few presents right now, but am really uninspired by the normal scarf intended for my brother. I need frilly fancy yart to keep me excited!
